Medieval Scorpions Effortpost

So yesterday I reblogged this post featuring an 11th-century depiction of the Apocalypse Locusts from Revelations, noting the following incongruity as another medieval scorpion issue:

The artist, as you can see, has interpreted "tails like scorpions" as meaning "glue cheerful-looking snakes to their butts".

Anyway, it occurred to me that the medieval scorpion thing might not be as widely known as I think it is, and that Tumblr would probably enjoy knowing about it if it isn't known already. So, finding myself unable to focus on the research I'm supposed to be doing, I decided to write about this instead. I'll just go ahead and put a cut here.

Here’s an interesting thing about French! Everything needs to have an article in front of it. That’s why it’s “la chat” as opposed to just “chat”. So, for instance, you could say la fille for the girl, or jeune fille for young girl, but you can’t just say fille, because that means you are calling her a sex worker in a derogatory way.

The moral of the story is, if you want to make something rude in French, just take out the article in front of it. Yes, this works for nearly. every. word.

I follow a feng shui guy on Instagram because he’s got an eye for interior design and a while ago he posted about #pride and how it’s actually bad feng shui for a gay guy to have to marry a straight woman because men are gay due to having more feminine energy and women have feminine energy so two feminine energies don’t go together, so gay people shouldn’t have to try to be straight... “Hot Reading” is a term from con artistry. It refers to tricking someone after you’ve done some background research on them that allows you to target your pitch more effectively. I.e. I’m a charismatic preacher who knows you’re gonna come to my show, so I look at your Facebook to see that you had a recent death in the family, who I will pretend to conjure onstage.

Conversely, “cold reading” is when you don’t prepare at all, using common tactics and lowest-common-denominator techniques. If I’m that same charismatic preacher, I channel a grandparent, because statistically you’ll have at least one dead grandparent.

A “Hard Read” is not a con artist term. That’s from fighting games. It refers to knowing an opponent so well, that you are able to predict what option they will perform next, i.e. beating someone at rock paper scissors because you know what they’ll choose next.
